\nBut he confessed to a complete change of heart after taking part in the Fastnet Race aboard the American schooner Mistress, writing that: \u201cThere was not a single hour of that race that I would have missed.\u201d
\nUp until then the race had been an annual event since the first in 1925, but from 1931 it would be \u2013 apart from the war years \u2013 every other year to allow it to alternate with the Bermuda Race.

\nThe inaugural event, called simply the Ocean Race, was open to \u201cfully decked yachts of any rig measuring not more than 50ft and not less than 30ft on the waterline\u201d according to the Notice of Race, and yachts \u2018must sail in cruising trim\u2019.
\nWith regard to crew, it specified: \u201cNo restriction will be made as to the number of amateurs carried, but no more paid hands will be permitted than can be normally accommodated in the fo\u2019c\u2019sle.\u201d
\nThat race was won by the Le Havre pilot cutter Jolie Brise which, after winning it again in 1929 and 1930, remains the only boat to have triumphed three times.

\nAt a dinner at Plymouth\u2019s Royal Western YC immediately after the first race, the (later Royal) Ocean Racing Club was formed with Jolie Brise\u2019s owner Lt Cmdr EG Martin as commodore.
\nThe recent announcement around the next two races finishing in Cherbourg has certainly caused some controversy. But it wasn\u2019t until 1949 that what is considered to be the traditional course, starting in Cowes, going through the Solent to the west and finishing in Plymouth, became established.
\nThe first race started from Ryde, as the Royal Western Yacht Club\u2019s new Lonely Rock Race did, with the Isle of Wight left to starboard. The next six also left the island to starboard, but started from Cowes, while in 1933 the fleet left the island to port for the first time, but finished in Cowes; and in 1935 it started in the western Wight, from Yarmouth.
\nJust six boats started the first race in 1925 when Jolie Brise\u2019s winning time was 6d 14h 45m. Compare that to last year when a record 388 boats took part and the Ultime Maxi Edmond de Rothschild took line honours in 1d 4h 2m.
\n\u201cThere is no doubt that the sport of ocean racing is growing more popular each year,\u2019 wrote Major Heckstall-Smith in 1930 as editor of Yachting World, \u201cand we are delighted that it should because it encourages and recruits many young amateurs to the sea.\u201d
